Naperville PD rolls out ‘Blue Envelope’ program for residents on the autism spectrum

For people on the autism spectrum, some encounters with police can be difficult, but Naperville police are working to make sure miscommunication doesn’t become confrontation in a traffic stop.
A simple blue envelope is now available to the public in Naperville. Its purpose: To help to make interactions with police safer and calmer for people on the autism spectrum.
It is stressful for anyone, I think, to be pulled over,” said Ali Smith Wieringa, a police social worker with the department. “So it is helpful for people with extra stressors or special needs to know they are supported.”
The suburb rolled out the Blue Envelope program a few weeks ago.
“You can put your ID, a copy of your license, registration inside. So, all the things you are asked for on a traffic stop are in one spot,” Smith Wieringa said.
It also includes space for communication instructions, such as preferred methods of interaction (verbal, non-verbal), use of specific language, or other support needs. Participants can also choose to include contact information for a designated support person.
“It is not just for traffic stops. Use it wherever you want because it will help both of us,” said Jason Arres, Naperville’s police chief.
Proof of condition or disability is not needed. Anyone who lives, works, or spends a considerable amount of time in Naperville can participate.
“If you say this will help a loved one – then by all means, stop in and get one,” Wieringa said.
Other law enforcement agencies across the country have adopted similar blue envelope programs, including police departments in Massachusetts, California, and New York.
You can pick up a Blue Envelope at the following locations: Naperville Police Department, Fry Family YMCA, Turning Pointe Autism Foundation, Naperville Public Library, 95th Street Library, Naper Blvd. Library, 2035 S Naper Blvd, Nichols Library, Lisle Township, Naperville Township and Wheatland Township.
